BOOT DÜSSELDORF TO PRESENT SECOND “OCEAN TRIBUTE” AWARD

High-profile activities promoting ocean protection are important for the success of World Oceans Day (June 8). boot Düsseldorf, The World’s Largest Boat and Watersports Show, has supported international ocean protection projects and activities for many years. In addition, since 2017, the “love your ocean” stand at the trade fair has presented ocean protection activities and provided information about water quality. In 2017the “ocean tribute” Award was launched and presented for the first time in 2018 (winners: Green Boats project, The Ocean Foundation and the logistics company Fairtransport). Ocean protection projects and organizations from all over the world can now apply for the “ocean tribute” Award 2019 at https://oceantributeaward.boot.de/ (choose “English” from the pulldown menu). High-impact projects that lead to substantial improvements in ocean and water quality, integrate as many people as possible in their activities and network with many other players are invited to apply. In addition, outstanding PR projects that draw public attention to problems and offer solutions for sustainable water management can also apply. The Award is backed by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the German Ocean Foundation, in addition to sponsorship by the underwater jet-ski manufacturer Seabob.

“With the “ocean tribute” award, boot has taken the right path. For many years we have supported projects and activists who are committed to water protection. The awarding of a prize was simply the logical continuation of our work. Especially as we have competent companions and experts on board with our partners from Monaco and the German Ocean Foundation. Our guideline in this context is the sustainability principle issued by the United Nations; the objective is to encourage the preservation as well as the sustainable development and use of oceans and marine resources,” explained boot Director Petros Michelidakis.

The “ocean tribute” Award therefore focuses on projects that aim to improve the cleanliness of the oceans by reducing the input of waste and nutrients or that pursue more sustainable management to protect marine and coastal ecosystems and take measures to restore them. Other priorities are ideas to reduce ocean acidification, research and development projects that use forward-looking technologies to protect and conserve the oceans, measures to regulate fishing activities effectively and scientifically sound management plans to help global fish stocks recover.

The Award is presented in three categories: society, industry and science. Individuals, organizations and institutions can enter their water protection projects, which are evaluated by a jury of experienced expert including Monika Breuch-Moritz (meteorologist, Director of the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency BSH), H.E. Bernard Fautrier (minister and former ambassador, Vice-President of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation), Professor Emeritus Dr. Hartmut Graßl (climate research scientist, Chairman of the Federation of German Scientists, former Director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology), Professor Emeritus Dr. Michael Orbach (anthropologist and prominent U.S. maritime policy consultant, Duke University), Robert Marx (President of the Association of the German Water Sports Industry and of boot Düsseldorf) and – representing Messe Düsseldorf – CEO Werner Matthias Dornscheidt.
