Trends, background information and inspirations – for three days retailers from all over the world received concentrated information on shoes and accessories for the 2016 Spring/Summer season at GDS – Global Destination for Shoes & Accessories, where 900 brands presented their collections. In addition, 233 exhibitors at the concurrently held tag it! - The Private Label Show for Shoes & Accessories, showcased their latest trends.

High visitor satisfaction
With 93%, the trade visitor satisfaction at GDS was very high among the about 15,000 attendees. “We welcomed exactly the same number of visitors as one year ago and our exhibitors have reported avid interest in their collections. You can feel that the retailers who attend GDS use it proactively as an information platform – in terms of content the developments are very positive. After the positive response in the trade press over the past two events, however, I would have liked to see the same trend for the visitor attendance as well,” stated Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf.

Kirstin Deutelmoser, Director of GDS, added: “Needless to say we are pleased with the exhibitors’ praise and the very high visitor satisfaction. But this cannot blind us to the fact that the general “footfall” is not sufficient to satisfy all exhibitors. We are getting an extremely positive feedback from the retailers who were here – it’s just a shame there were not more of them coming.”

One reason for the high visitor satisfaction was not only the diversity of brands exhibited at GDS but also the multi-faceted trend inspirations provided. Exciting impulses were generated by the various catwalk shows and the project presentations of 20 international Design Trendsetters, the Polish HUSH Warsaw designers and the Portuguese Young Talents.

However, GDS provided retailers not only with input for new collections. The GDS Trend Spots also offered possibilities for brick and mortar retailers to stand out from the competitors with creative merchandise display. While Forum Touch centered on novel and innovative materials, the Highlight-Route provided a sneak peek of the future: with the heading “Digital Craft”, various 3D technologies were presented.

Celebrities among the GDS visitors included Collien Ulmen Fernandes (German TV presenter, actress and model) and German designer Thomas Rath, taking a close look at the highlights from the STUDIO Area during the opening catwalk show. Germany’s first “Next Top Model” Barbara Meier was featured prominently in the Skechers catwalk show. Soccer players Rudi Völler (for Lloyd) and Jürgen Kohler (for Josef Seibel) – two 1990 world cup winners – were also among the VIP guests.

Retailers interested in new looks
The retailers visiting GDS were particular interested in the exhibitors’ new looks. A leading trend is the Hippie look – leather in warm tones and clogs in wood. Moccasins, espadrilles and Roman sandals will also be a key fashion theme next summer. The fact that retailers visit GDS in order to identify such trends early on as was confirmed by a market research: 80% of the polled visitors stated that they use GDS as a source of information to be well prepared for the new season. This underscores the trade show’s importance as a leading event. Top retailers also place great importance on the exchange with the industry. Every second retailer uses GDS to get targeted contacts and to cultivate their network.

Using GDS primarily to gather information and to place orders right away is not a contradiction in terms: two thirds of the buyers polled made their purchasing decisions on site. And needs-based purchasing is obviously becoming more important: 39% of the visitors placed orders for immediate delivery.

A total of 61% of the visitors welcomed the accessories ranges, which had been extended as part of the new concept.

Over 160 bloggers reported about shoes
In addition to GDS testimonial blogger Nina Schwichtenberg of “Fashiioncarpet”, over 160 fashion bloggers came to GDS on July 31 to discover the latest footwear trends and to visit the FashionBloggerCafé “shoedition” organized in cooperation with Styleranking. A special highlight was the Blogger Runway Show, with five fashion bloggers staging the latest show trends from five partner labels.

Premiere of Düsseldorf Fashion Sourcing at tag it!
One in four GDS visitors were also interested in the sourcing trade show tag it!. New this year was the concurrent staging of the Düsseldorf Fashion Sourcing (DFS) trade show organized by Chinatex Advertising & Exhibition (CTEC), with 110 selected producers and suppliers of clothing and textiles.

Schuhkurier Awards presented
On the evening of July 29, schuhkurier presented its coveted awards at the K 21 Ständehaus museum. German footwear manufacturer Horst Wortmann was also recognized for his lifetime achievements.

On July 31, the second OUT OF THE BOX Festival for Shoes & Accessories was celebrated in the Düsseldorf city center, including special activities in selected stores. This included the runway show with 14 Brazilian trend brands, the Autumn/Winter trends presented by shoe manufacturer Ara at the Schadowplatz, the Deichmann High Heel Run at Graf-Adolf-Platz, hosted by TV presenter Peyman Amin as well as super-sized model shoe sculptures and the After-Shoe Party at Dr. Thompsons Club.
