Messe Düsseldorf North America RECORD RESULTS AT HOSPITALAR 2009The recent staging of HOSPITALAR 2009, International Fair of Products, Equipment, Service and Technology for Hospitals, Laboratories, Pharmacies, Clinics and Medical Offices, in São Paulo, Brazil, closed with new visitor, exhibitor and sales results records. A total of 86,000 professional visits from more than 60 countries was recorded – a 10% growth compared to the 2008 staging. The amount of deals and sales by the exhibitors reached US$ 2.5 billion, an increase of 7%. HOSPITALAR 2009 was the largest edition of the trade fair with 1,200 exhibiting companies from 32 countries on 882,600 square feet of exhibit space. According to Dr. Waleska Santos, Founder and President of HOSPITALAR, the trade fair’s success was determined by many positive facts: the size of the event has increased by 20%, the number of visitors has grown significantly and the attendees were more qualified. But the crucial issue was the fact that the Brazilian healthcare market is growing, based on the significant investment increase hospitals and the medical industries received in order to expand and improve the quality of their services. "In spite of the retraction in the global economy, especially in the U.S. and in Europe, the healthcare market in Brazil shows a positive performance, both in public and private sectors", commented Dr. Waleska Santos. The Brazilian imports of medical products and equipment (not including pharmaceuticals) grew 33% from 2007 to 2008, with an increase from US$ 2.7 billion to US$ 3.6 billion. The Brazilian companies also registered growth in sales. Companies associated with the Brazilian Association of the Medical-Dental Industry (ABIMO) reported US$ 3.2 billion in sales in 2008, 5% more than in 2007. “The major Brazilian hospitals have not reduced investments in expansion, improvement and update of their facilities, thus keeping the market in motion”, added Dr. Waleska Santos. Over 400 of the exhibitors at HOSPITALR 2009 were from outside of Brazil, including firms from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan as well as Turkey, Uruguay and the U.S. A total of 19 of the 39 U.S. exhibitors showcased their products within the successful U.S. Pavilion, organized by Messe Düsseldorf North America. The participation of international buyers at HOSPITALAR grows every year. The 2009 edition registered 7% more buyers than in 2008 and 27% more than in 2007. Latin-American buyers were the majority among international visitors (not from Brazil), confirming HOSPITALAR as the leading healthcare trade fair and forum in Latin America. The countries with the largest number of visitors were Argentina, Peru, Chile, the U.S., Colombia, Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Venezuela and Mexico. The trade fair also attracted buyers from countries such as the Angola, Canada, Germany, India, Iran, Lebanon, Quatar and the United Arab Emirates. The steady growth of international visitor participation in the past years is the result of increased promotion abroad, strategic alliances with important international partners in the health sector (such as the International Hospital Federation-IHF and Messe Düsseldorf, the organizer of the MEDICA trade fair) and co-operations with organizations that support companies interested in international locations. HOSPITALAR is the indicator for the Brazilian healthcare market, a sector which has a turnover of US$ 121 billion a year in Brazil and represents some 8% of the country’s GDP. HOSPITALAR traditionally influences over 25% of the annual sales turnover of the medical-hospital industry and consequently, exhibitors usually schedule their product launches in time for HOSPITALAR. Fanem, a company exporting neonatology products to over 90 countries, registered deals worth US$ 1 billion in immediate sales and plans to reach US$ 2.2 million in the next few months. Segmenta, specialized in parental solutions, hospital cleaners and anti-septics had up to 1,500 clients a day in their stand and expects that sales grow by 30% due to the trade fair. White Martins, the largest supplier of industrial and medicinal gases in Latin America, reported a 20% growth in business during HOSPITALAR while Bionexo, Latin American electronic business community to hospitals, registered a rise of 40% in deals during the event. GE Healthcare announced big investments (about US $ 50 million) in Brazil and started to build its first Latin America x-ray and mammography equipment factory in Minas Gerais. Companies such as Siemens, Stryker, Johnson & Johnson, Toshiba Medical, Dräger and Philips did not disclose the value of their business deals but rated the visitors’ buying power and the quality of the contacts made as very positive. In 2010, HOSPITALAR will be held from May 25 - 28 at the Expo Center Norte in São Paulo.
