2007 SUCCESSFUL STAGING OF HOSPIMEDICA THAILAND 2007Some 3,800 trade visitors from 52 countries and 250 exhibitors from 24 nations participated in HOSPIMEDICA THAILAND 2007, International Exhibition on Hospital, Diagnostics, Pharmaceutical, Medical & Rehabilitation Equipment & Supplies, when it was recently held in Bangkok. Approximately 80% of the visitors were from Thailand and large visitor contingents also came from Singapore, Malaysia, India and China. HOSPIMEDICA THAILAND 2007 featured 8 country group exhibits from Austria, Belgium, China, Germany, Great Britain, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. Messe Düsseldorf Asia’s Managing Director Gernot Ringling noted in his official opening speech that the exhibitor number this year increased by 40% compared with the inaugural event in 2003. This growth in exhibitor numbers was expected since the market for medical equipment and supplies in Thailand is anticipated to maintain a steady growth of 20% in 2007. Thailand relies largely on imports of medical supplies: 80% of the country’s high tech medical equipment and accessories are imported. A total of 1.1 million overseas patients sought medical treatment in Thailand in 2006, generating approximately US $1.1 billion – and the number of patients will double by 2010. Over 95% of the exhibitors came from outside of Thailand, highlighting the importance of the Thai and Indochina markets for the medical sector. Europe accounted for 30.9% of the exhibitors while non-ASEAN Asian nations made up 52.6% of the exhibitors. There was also a strong Chinese presence (24% of the exhibitors). The growth of Thailand’s healthcare sector mainly derives from expansion of healthcare facilities, replacement of medical equipment and upgrades. Demand is further increased by private hospitals focusing on specific fields and targeting patients with specific treatment needs including cardiac, ophthalmic, neuro, dialysis, dental and plastic surgery. “These strategies will have a great impact on the demand for cutting edge and top quality medical devices and accessories,” explained Dr. Chatri Banchuin, Director General of Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. In 2009, the show will return to Bangkok under the name MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND, and be held from September 16 – 18, 2009.
