The recent staging of REHACARE 2014, International Trade Fair and Congress “Self-determined Living”, closed in Düsseldorf, Germany to positive results and demonstrated the importance of issues concerning people with disabilities, those requiring care and the elderly. A total of 51,250 trade visitors, people affected and their families came to gather information about innovative assistive technologies presented by 902 exhibitors from 36 countries. This marks a slight visitor increase compared to the staging in 2012 (traditionally, REHACARE has a comparable exhibit range every two years and visitors figures are therefore compared to those of 2012 (51,000 visitors), not 2013 (43,500 visitors)). According to a survey, 96% of the REHACARE 2014 attendees were pleased with the trade fair and its product ranges.

“Ageing societies, rising life expectancy and the associated nursing care problems, but also the increasing demands of people affected and the elderly on autonomy and participation are the key innovation drivers for the rehabilitation and nursing care industry. Exhibitors from both Germany and abroad presented a wealth of innovations and further developments especially in the field of mobility. Both people affected and experts want to benefit from these,” explained Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf.

Dr. Martin Danner, Managing Director of the Federal Working Group for Self-Help (BAG SELBSTHILFE), praised the diversity of the trade fair: “REHACARE is a must for all those seeking an overview of the aids available for people with impairments today. Here, everything is offered from everyday aids to highly individualized high-tech products for just about every disability.” People affected also appreciate REHACARE as an information platform explaining the policy framework for the disabled. “Our information events on the imminent reforms of the nursing care insurance and the German Participation Act were very well attended,” added Dr. Danner.

The exhibitors at REHACARE 2014 were delighted at the high turnout of trade visitors. “Our products and services require in-depth consulting. This is why specialist retailers are our most important partners. In Düsseldorf we hoped to explain to this target group how our international brand network helps ensure performance. And these expectations were fulfilled. We met with a very interested and expert audience,” stated Udo T. Weinstock, Trade Marketing Manager of INVACARE GmbH, Isny, which produces a variety of equipment ranging from sanitary products for nursing care to mobility solutions.

About 8,100 trade visitors from the sales and import sector travelled to REHACARE 2014 from abroad. Coming from over 40 countries, these attendees are essential especially for an export-oriented industry such as the AT sector.

The majority of the REHACARE 2014 visitors were interested in mobility such as vehicles and wheelchairs. About 20% came for products and information about “Barrier-Free Building and Living”.

Tourism, leisure and sports are gaining in popularity. More and more visitors are interested in the travel market and the Sport Center at REHACARE. One in five visitors obtained information from the North Rhine-Westphalia Disability Sports Association (BSNW) about disability sports or took part in the numerous activities. “Attendance was simply phenomenal this year. We have become the meeting point for all trade fair visitors keen about sports and this fact is also one increasingly recognized by exhibitors who are represented here with wheelchairs and other leisure and sports products. People want to try out what they see at the stands on display here. A great development that shows us that we are on the right track,” remarked Herbert Kaul, General Manager of BSNW.

The REHACARE Congress 2014 with the topic “District Development - ALL in the Midst of Things” dealt with the development of districts, neighborhoods and communities into sustainable living environments suitable for old-age requirements. 400 congress delegates from urban planning and regional policy participated in the seven lecture series and 50 individual talks.
