With its innovations and topics focusing on rehabilitation and care, REHACARE 2013, International Trade Fair and Congress “Self-determined Living”, recently closed in Düsseldorf, Germany to positive results: 43,500 visitors participated to gather information on products for self-determined living and new research findings presented by 750 exhibitors from 37 countries. As is tradition, the exhibit product range this year was comparable to that of the 2011 staging, when 47,000 visitors took part.

“Even though we were not able to match 2011’s visitor numbers this year, REHACARE 2013 was an all around success with a plethora of innovations and developments. The congress’ topics on home care, self-determined living in old age and the national affliction of stroke complemented the range at the trade fair perfectly,” stated Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf. “The pace at which the technical possibilities and know-how in this sector are developing necessitates an international platform where highly innovative SMEs, in particular, can foster links with their customers and partners on an annual basis. Furthermore, we guarantee that the physically challenged and those in need of care or suffering from chronic illness can be given on-going access to information and can take full advantage of their opportunities for a normal social life.”

Dr. Martin Danner, National Managing Director of BAG SELF-HELP (German Federal Association of people with disabilities, chronic illnesses and their relatives), agreed: “REHACARE is a great forum for finding out what the key topics and issues currently are for those requiring assistive equipment. Self-help plays a central role when information on new assistive technology needs to be combined with personal advice and support. This year the key congress theme “strokes” also promoted collaboration among experts in the care field. The lectures and presentations held at the Café Forum on the topic of disabled travel, sports and leisure met with great interest.”

The focal point of the “Assistive Technology Forum” was the issue of integrated care. “The concepts are in place,” said Dr. Danner. Currently under discussion is the role of the Case Manager, who guides the patient throughout the entire care process.

The majority of the REHACARE 2013 exhibitors were also pleased with their participation. “REHACARE was once again a resounding success. We remain loyal partners of the trade fair. Many in-depth discussions with our customers and partners as well as with visitors from both home and abroad in addition to the interest by numerous users have all shown that we are consistently meeting market demands with our product solutions in the field of prosthetics, orthotics, mobility solutions and neurorehabilitation,” noted Norbert Aumann, Managing Director of Otto Bock HealthCare Germany.

Touch Bionics from Great Britain, specialized in high-tech prosthetics, was delighted with REHACARE 2013. “For us Germany is a very important market. We came to Düsseldorf primarily to introduce patients to our innovative prosthetic hands. Many are unaware of our product or the technical possibilities available in this field. We were met with huge interest and are entirely satisfied. REHACARE is sure to see us return as exhibitors again,” said Operations Manager Matthew Parkinson.

Robin Lamy, Manager of the French group stand SPORALTEC, particularly noted “the many international sales contacts” the exhibitors were able to make at his stand.

With its 90 lectures on the topic of “Self-Determined Living and Home Care”, the REHACARE Congress attracted 600 participants interested in information about age-related living concepts, the symptoms of stroke, preventative measures and rehabilitation options.

At the REHACARE Congress opening, Barbara Steffens, Minister for Health, Equality, Care and Ageing in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, congratulated the congress as an event which contributes to overcome barriers, particularly the barriers in people’s minds.

A highlight at REHCARE 2013 was the Sports Center of the North Rhine-Westphalia Disabled Sport Association (BSNW). Reinhard Schneider, Chairman of the Board of BSNW, remarked: “At REHACARE we offer motivation. Many people are still surprised by the wide variety of sports available for people with disabilities. And we are seeing a great deal of interest from partners in the field of politics and business who often become key promoters and multipliers.”

The next REHACARE will be held in Düsseldorf, Germany from September 24 - 27, 2014.
